A favorite winter warmer, the hot toddy is sipped as a soothing tonic before bedtime, or as relief to cold, wet weather. It was named for the toddy drink in India, created from a drink of the toddy palm, then carried to Scotland by the East India Company as a hot whiskey drink of water, honey, herbs, and spices.
One serving: Boil 1 cup of water. Add 1 tablespoon of spice blend. Steep spices 5 minutes, then strain into a warm glass tumbler. Add 1 teaspoon of honey. Stir in 2 ounces of whiskey, rum, or brandy. Top off the glass with boiling water, serving steaming hot with a cinnamon stick.
